Gampel-Bratsch-Jeizinen-Engersch

In the area around the small, idyllic alpine villages of Engersch and Jeizinen, you can look forward to plenty of sun, rich biodiversity and stunning views into the Rhone valley and of the Valais region’s two dozen mountains, which measure over 4,000 metres. Situated at around 1,600 metres above sea level in the Gampel-Bratsch municipality, the villages are easily accessible from Leukerbad by road, bike and on foot. Nature has blessed the area between the valley floor near Gampel and the Niwen, Bach and Fesel mountains. There you’ll find a variety of natural landscapes, including gnarly oak forests, open larch woods and swathes of thick fir trees. Enjoy the stark contrast between the mountainside dry steppe areas, pastures and meadows filled with alpine flowers. In addition, you’ll find thriving flora and fauna, which are seldom seen elsewhere. These include fields blossoming with bright pink red-campion flowers, and smoke trees that turn the whole mountainside bright red in autumn. Bird lovers should watch out for rare species such as bee-eaters, quails and skylarks. Or, if you look across the valley from the cable-car station in the car-free centre of Jeizinen, you might even catch a glimpse of a pair of majestic eagles circling high above.
